California High School Speech Team Places Second

Saturday, Dec. 10, eighteen members of the CHS Speech Team placed second of twelve schools participating in the Sacred Heart Speech Tournament.

Speech team sponsor Tiffany Brown said, "It was the first time any of these students participated in a speech competition, and I am extremely proud of how well all of them did."

Students continued to the final round in eight of the ten events. Students who placed include: Kassi Meisenheimer first in Poetry Reading and Humorous Interpretation, third in Dramatic Interpretation; Jordan Brizendine, second in Radio Speaking and Rebecca Suen, third in Poetry Reading.

Brown said she was "thrilled to have so many entries make it to the final round."

Suen said to prepare she attended two practices with Brown and practiced on her own at home.

Students competed in the following ten categories: Poetry Reading, Humorous Interpretation, Duet Acting, Dramatic Interpretation, Storytelling, Extemporaneous Speaking, Radio Speaking, Original Oratory, Improvisational Duet and Prose Reading.

Margret Mace said the contest was different than she expected. "The whole setup was more relaxed than I thought," she said.

Mace also added that the best part of the contest was "listening to other performers present their interesting pieces."

"I'm hoping this tournament's success will encourage even more students to join and compete with the speech team in the future," Brown added.
