California loses close contest at Osage

The California High School softball teams played at Osage Sept. 28, where the varsity Lady Pintos suffered a 3-0 loss to the Lady Indians.

California's JV also lost to Osage.

"Our JV played a good game and made several very good plays," California Coach Dwight Fitzwater said. "We hit the ball pretty good. They were just better than us. Also, they had several girls who played varsity in their JV line-up, where we only had one varsity player in our JV line-up."

California hosted New Bloomfield Monday, for the Lady Pintos' last games of the regular season, where the varsity Lady Pintos lost a close game, 15-13. The JV Lady Pintos defeated New Bloomfield 10-9.

California's varsity girls (6-12) will play Versailles at 3 p.m. today (Wednesday) in the opening round of the Class 3 District 13 Softball Tournament at the UCM Softball Complex, Warrensburg. The winner will advance to semifinals at 4:30 p.m. Thursday to play top-seeded Boonville. The district championship game is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Friday.

"I'm looking forward to districts," California Coach Jack Lake said. "Versailles beat us once and we beat them once, so I'm expecting this to be a good game. I think if we can play an error-free game and keep our bats hot, we'll be okay."

Lake said Elle Miller will be pitching for California. "Elle's done a good job of pitching for us this year. I think if our defense was a little more solid, we could have won some of our close games."
