For two weekends, the City of California Yard Waste Recycling Center is offering free mulch to all who can come out to the center located in north California on Route O. The first weekend was April 15-16 and the second weekend will be April 22-23 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday.
Cody Kunze, who works with the City Electric Department, helped load mulch on truck beds and trailers with a backhoe. He said when residents dump their yard waste the city takes the grass clippings, brush and branches and grinds and mixes them into mulch with a big hammermill machine. Once mixed they give it away free of charge for anyone who has something for them to load it into.
