While interviewing for a job, Grant Cappen Kirk was asked what he wanted to do in life, after not hearing an answer, the interviewer then asked Kirk what he would do if given a million dollars to which Kirk immediately replied, "I would probably start a restaurant." After hearing this, the interviewer then remarked, "well then, that is what you want to do."

Kirk is now doing that with Cappenkirk's Barbecue located at 401 West Buchanan.

"The restaurant is a family owned business," Kirk said, "that started in a shack up the street with a canopy and a smoker. With the help and support of those like Brooke and Bill Pace, Nolan and Rita Schueler and my father, I have been able to move into my current location. I have worked in a lot of different restaurants with a lot of different styles of menu. I even worked for a five star chef at Lake of the Ozarks. In 2008 I worked at a barbecue place in Jefferson City and it did not take me long to realize barbecue is what I want to do."

Currently, the menu consists of brisket, burnt end or pulled pork sandwiches with homestyle sides such as potato salad and baked beans. Kirk said those going to Cappenkirk's will find good barbecue and a family atmosphere. He added while they deliver prompt service, they should not be mistaken for fast food.
