CHS Tracksters prepare for March 28

California High School track members have been participating in pre-season workouts every Tuesday and Thursday. They are preparing for the upcoming 2012 season beginning Monday, Feb. 27. Coaches Rick Edwards, Josh Grotzinger and Richard Matzes are leading these workouts. The teams first meet is March 28.

Coach Grotzinger, the distance coach, runs with his runners every Tuesday and Thursday, but they are responsible for running on the off days as well.

Short distance coach Rick Edwards also has workouts for his runners; these workouts consist of stretches, a variety of sprints, cardio station workouts and weight-lifting. Walter Juarez, a returning state qualifier and senior, is looking forward to this year's track season. Juarez commented, "My goals for this year's season is to break the school's 100m dash record of 11.2 seconds; my fastest time is 11.3 seconds."

Coach Matzes, the jumping coach, does not have any jumpers who are able to attend these pre-season workouts because they are involved in other extracurricular activities. Therefore, their season will start Feb. 27.

There are three returning state qualifiers in running and one returning All-State jumper. Returning state qualifiers are Seth Fairchild, Walter Juarez and Anthony Price. They made it to state for the 4x100 meter relay. Sydney Deeken, All-State, received first in high jump, third in triple jump, fourth in long jump and 10th in the 200m dash. Deeken is also looking forward to this year's season. "It feels great being as young as I am and accomplishing the goals I did. I just want to improve in every event I do this year," said Deeken.
