LU wins $10,000 in Home Depot contest

Lincoln University is getting a $10,000 grant from the Home Depot company's "Retool Your School" contest, along with 10 other historically black colleges and universities.

An LU news release said the money would be used to improve landscaping around Elliff Hall - on the north side of East Dunklin Street and opposite the Richardson Fine Arts Building and Mitchell Auditorium - which houses Lincoln's Nursing School and the JCTV studio and offices.

The winners were announced today, from the online voting that began in early February and ended April 10.

LU received 66,424 votes in the competition, more than 13,000 fewer than 5th Place Howard University of Washington, D.C., which captured 79,678 votes.

Home Depot was offering 13 prizes to help HBCUs "make enduring improvements to their campus and facilities."

The top prize was $50,000, and the big winner this was the "other" Lincoln University - Lincoln University of Pennsylvania, southwest of Philadelphia (and northwest of Wilmington, Del.), received 243,608 votes.

They said they planned to use their grant money to restore the exterior, front porch and entryway of Lincoln Hall, one of the school's original campus buildings.

The second biggest vote-getter was Alabama A&M University, with 229,764 votes.
