Rural firefighters sponsor demo derby

Saturday, Oct. 20, is the day for a Demolition Derby and Figure 8 Scramble sponsored by the California Rural and Jamestown Rural Fire Protection Districts.

The "1st Annual Firefighter's Crash and Bash" is a fundraiser for the two fire districts and will be in the Main Arena at the Moniteau County Fairgrounds. Gates will open at 2 p.m. and beginning at 7 p.m. are the events of the night including a Compact Demolition Derby, a Figure 8 Race and a Powderpuff Derby.

General admission is $5 with all proceeds going to the fire districts.

According to Jamestown Fire Chief Steve Borts, the proceeds will be used for items which would be nice to have, but are not directly related to firefighting.

"It's a tax-based entity and the taxes never cover all of the bills," Borts said. "We never have enough. Budgets only go so far.

"There are things we'd like to see, such as storage racks in the station for firefighting gear and a flagpole in front. But we don't like to use tax money for non-firefighting items."

Borts said fundraisers are about the only way to do these nice extras which the firefighters and local residents would like to have at the fire station.
