The California High School Library has three new Nooks (electronic readers) and a digital camera thanks to the Sonic "Limeades for Learning" program.
According to Librarian Janet Henley, the new library acquisitions are the result of a posted project being selected from the other entries in the "Limeades for Learning Teacher Project" contest.
The way it works is for a project to be created through the Sonic website.
"From here teachers, students, parents and interested parties can vote for favorite projects via email," Henley said. "Votes can also be cast by using codes given to customers of Sonic with their receipt."
Students and teachers who are behind a project register their school email and vote for that project. This is one area where multiple voting is encouraged. One vote is allowed each day from each voter during the five-week campaign. Voting began Sept. 24 and ended Oct. 29.
The projects are limited to one project for each teacher. Sonic will fund no more than $600 for any specific project. If the project is more than $600, it is left on the donorschoose.org site so the remainder of the project can be funded by others who may wish to donate to complete the project. If they go to Sonic and get a "Limeades for Learning" sticker off their receipt, they get two extra votes.
Sonic funds $100,000 of the top vote-receiving projects.
This is not the first time the CHS library has benefited from the Sonic program. Last year, the program allowed the library to purchase $500 worth of Britannica reference books. Henley had registered the project on donorschoose.org which partnered with Sonic on LimeadesForLearning.com website. The votes came in and the library received the much-needed reference materials.
After the success of the project, Henley developed another project for this year. Once again, the library turned up a winner.
"Limeades for Learning" starts each September. To register, go to www.sonicdrivein.com, www.limeades for learning.com or donorschoose.org.
