Goans leads California in match against Sacred Heart
Wednesday, September 12, 2012
The California High School varsity girls golf team hosted Sacred Heart Sept. 4 at the California Country Club, where the Lady Pintos finished with 202, while Sacred Heart won the match with 183. Haley Goans led California with 47. Ellie Hamilton and Rylee Glenn followed with 51 each.
"I'm a little disappointed with our play right now," California Coach Lance Conner said. "The only times we have shot over 200 as a team have been on our home course, which should be an advantage. It's actually been a weakness for us. There's no question we have some girls searching for confidence in their game right now. We just need to keep positive and work hard every day to get better. Sacred Heart is better than us right now in virtually all aspects of the game, but I know we can compete at their level when we play our best golf."
While neither team had enough players for a JV match, individually California's Emily Arnold was the JV medalist with 51, followed closely by teammate and runner-up Sophie Brant with 52.
California hosted Hallsville Thursday, where the varsity Lady Pintos finished with 208. (Hallsville only had three players.)
California's Becca Hamilton was the medalist with a season low 49, followed by sister Ellie Hamilton who was the runner-up with 51.
"Once again our score was not where I expect it to be at this point in the season," Conner said. "However, for the first time in a match, I saw high quality shots from every one of my girls. There's no doubt we're struggling at various aspects of our game, or our scores would be lower, but I know we're making improvements. We just have to be mentally tougher, make adjustments during the round, and become more consistent. Unfortunately, our bad shots are trumping our good shots right now. If we can eliminate that, we should start to see our individual and team scores come down."
The Lady Pintos traveled to New Bloomfield Monday, Sept. 10, however, match results were not available at press time.
California’s varsity will compete at the Marshall Invitational at 9 a.m. Monday, Sept. 17.
