California R-I kindergarten class is 116

The California R-I School Board regular monthly meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 19, was the first meeting following the start of school for the 2012-13 year. Total district enrollment was presented at 1,308.

As of the school board meeting, Elementary School enrollment is: kindergarten - 116; first - 102; second - 97; third - 93; fourth - 102; fifth - 89. The total is 599.

Middle School enrollment is: sixth - 97; seventh - 92; and eight - 102. The total is 291.

High School enrollment is: freshman - 114; sophomore - 104; junior - 106; and senior - 93. The total is 418. There are also two MIssouri Option students.

It was announced that the elementary student swimming program will be back in the curriculum for kindergarten through second grade in the early spring.

The new school lunch requirements the school must comply with were discussed. According to Superintendent Dwight Sanders, the regulation of a 12-ounce maximum protein limit each week for a high school student is hard to comply with. Because the new meal pattern has maximum limits for protein amounts, students may be seeing smaller servings of the main entrée. Sanders said some have been buying a second entrée. There is no meat or protein served at breakfast.

At the high school, a Tri-County Leadership Academy hosted by CHS was scheduled for the day after the board meeting. It is funded by John Glennon of the Jostens Company. Since Hallsville and Southern Boone are now in the Tri-County Conference, new painted mascots have been installed in the gym. Painted by Brad Friedrich, they were installed by Keith Reed and Ron Ash.

At the Middle School, the Middle School Scholastic Book Fair will be displayed in the library Oct. 15-19.

At the Elementary School, the PTO Carnival is scheduled for Sept. 29, from 4 to 8 p.m. Usually held in October, it is hoped that the earlier date will have better weather. The PTO wants to use these funds and other funds they can obtain to replace the cafeteria tables.

Items passed in the Consent Agenda included approval of substitute teachers and non-certified for the year; the district testing manual; Susan Baker for District testing; approval of stipends for District mentors for the school year.

The next meeting will be at 6 p.m., Oct. 17.
