CMS passes out honors

After a challenging academic year at Central Methodist University, students and faculty in science, mathematics and computer science took time to celebrate at an awards banquet Saturday, April 6.

Fifteen awards to 16 outstanding students and one to an outstanding faculty member, were presented at the Division of Science, Math and Computer Science Honors Banquet, according to Dr. James "Tiger" Gordon, division chair. Many awards included a cash prize.

Jesse Marks, a junior mathematics major, Lebanon, was the recipient of two honors. One, the Clyde and Hazel Blattner Award, was for mathematics; the second, the Dr. Glenn R. Joyce Memorial Award, was for physics.

A second mathematics honor, the Kappa Mu Epsilon Award, was presented to Tabatha Hoback, a junior mathematics major, California.

Angel Smith, a senior computer science major, Fayette, received the CMU Computer Science Award.

Three students were presented with chemistry awards. Kristen Willer, a senior athletic training major, Fulton, gained the Gamma Sigma Epsilon Excellence in General Chemistry Award. The gamma Sigma Epsilon Excellence in Organic Chemistry Award was presented to Luke Mayer, a junior biology major, Sullivan. The Dr. Niels C. Nielsen Outstanding Chemistry Student Award went to Rebecca Brehe, a senior chemistry major, Washington.

Six awards in the field of biology were presented. The Beta Beta Beta Biology Award was given to two students: Lauren Little, a sophomore biology major, Hallsville, and Novy Foland II, a junior biology major, Fayette.

Jill Petzel, a freshman pre-nursing major, Columbia, garnered the Alpha Epsilon Delta Excellence in Physiology Award. The Alpha Epsilon Delta Excellence in Anatomy Award went to Kaitlynn Troxel, a sophomore biology major, Gerald. Wil Norviel, a senior biology major, Cadet, received the Alpha Epsilon Delta Harold Momberg Award.

The Dr. Ferris H. and Leona Wood Award went to Aubrey Utley, a junior biology major, Trenton. Zach Wallace, a senior biology major, Rogersville, received the Jeff Wilcox "Raising the Bar" award.

The Division of Science, Math and Computer Science presented three special citations. The Sarah Rutherford Prize went to Kristen Bailey, a senior chemistry major, St. Louis. Kayla Leeser, a senior biology major, Fayette, took home the Glen C. Riegel Student Award.

Dr. Lea Daniel, a CMU assistant professor of biology, was chosen by her faculty peers as the recipient of the Glen C. Reigel Faculty Award.
