The California High School Speech Team had 16 entries qualify for the finals at the Salisbury 38th Annual Speech Tournament Jan. 26.

The team of 14 placed fourth in the Sweepstakes.

Maria Banda tied for first place in poetry.

Courtney Kilmer took second place in extemporaneous speaking.

Third place finishes were earned by Chelsea Kilmer in extemporaneous speaking and Alex Davis in radio.

Davis also took fourth in storytelling, as did Courtney Kilmer in original oratory.

Fifth place finishes went to Taylor Werdehausen in extemporaneous speaking, Caitlin Dummermuth in radio and Alden Millering in poetry.

Dakota Harris placed sixth in humorous interpretation. The team of Mason Albertson and Ashley Davis also finished sixth in improvisational duet acting.

Chelsea Kilmer added a seventh-place finish in radio to her day.

The California team also performed "Amish Paradise" in the tournament's lip sync competition, earning them fourth place.

"As the competition increases and becomes more difficult I'm pleased that the CHS Speech Team is still holding their own in each tournament as we approach districts," said Coach Tiffany Brown.

The California Speech Team will host its first tournament Saturday, Feb. 2.

"We are very excited to be hosting our first home speech tournament," Brown said. "The community and staff outpouring of help has been amazing."
