The school buses which transport the students to and from public schools in the general readership area of the California Democrat are safe according to the Missouri Highway Patrol inspections.

During its annual bus inspection program, the patrol inspected nearly 12,000 buses in the state with 88 percent found to be safe.

In the eight schools covered by the Democrat, 88.9 percent of the buses passed the inspection. There were 54 buses inspected with six found to have defects. None were taken out of service.

An example of a defect would be a light out on the bus. Buses rated defective may continue in operation for student transportation until a repair is made. School districts are allowed 10 days following the initial inspection to repair defects before being re-inspected.

An example of an out-of-service rating would be a serious problem such as the stop sign arm not functioning.

Buses taken out-of-service must be repaired, then re-inspected before being placed back in service. Fortunately, none of the area buses had to be taken out of service.

In the county, 38 buses were inspected with 34 passing the first inspection.
