A California man was buried up to his waist when a ditch he was contracted to excavate caved in off of County Club Drive in Fulton Monday, sending him to University Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

City Aldermen looking into bid process used for purchases
After defeating Russellville in the opening match of the Class 2 District 7 Volleyball Tournament Oct. 28 at Fatima High School, Westphalia, the #3 seeded Lady Pintos faced #2 seeded Blair Oaks in the semifinal round Oct. 29, where California lost a hard-fought match to the Lady Falcons, 25-27 and 22-25, to end the season.
Thursday's opener in Class 3 District 6 play at Riley Field served its purpose as the win got the Pintos one step closer to attaining one of their goals, the district championship. One down, two to go.

The California Middle School eighth grade volleyball team ended the 2013 season 8-3.
The California Middle School seventh grade volleyball team ended the 2013 season undefeated at 11-0.
The California High School girls' golf team wrapped up the 2013 season with a banquet Oct. 28 at the California Country Club, where athletes, Coach Ashley Atteberry, family and friends gathered to reflect on the season following a carry-in dinner provided by parents.
The California High School cross country team competed at the Class 2 District 4 Meet Saturday at Westphalia, where two Lady Pintos, Katie Imhoff and Leah Korenberg, and two Pintos, Adam Burkett and Zach Merrill, finished in the top 15 individually to earn All-District honors and advance to the state cross country championships Saturday, Nov. 9, at Oak Hills Golf Center, Jefferson City.
The Russellville High School cross country team competed at the Class 1 District 3 cross country championships Saturday at Westphalia, where the Indians won the boys' team division and the Lady Indians won the girls' team division.
Registration for California Parks and Rec. Youth Basketball for grades 3-4 is currently underway and will continue through the deadline of Nov. 25.
