Pintos open season with win

The California High School boys golf teams opened the 2014 season by hosting a quad with Russellville, New Bloomfield and Versailles March 24 at the California Country Club, where the Pintos came away with a win.

"It's good to start off the season with a win, but I was a little disappointed with my boys' scores," California Coach Doug Miller said. "But then when I saw the other scores, I felt a little better. The cold weather might have been a factor."

California finished with 186, followed by New Bloomfield with 191, Versailles with 209, and Russellville with 219.

Travis Reger, Versailles, was the medalist with 38.

California freshman Dylan Kramel and New Bloomfield's Tyler Grace were the runners-up with 42 each.

Other individual results for California were: junior Kade McAdams, 46; senior John Wolken, 48; senior Tyler Elliott, 50; and senior Cole George, 51.

Individual results for Russellville were: Coy Bond, 48; Devin Koestner, 52; Austin Garrison, 56; and Cody Willingham, 63. California's JV individual results were: freshman Dustin Ferguson, 45; freshman Luke Freeman, 51; and freshman Kale McAdams, 52. "I'm very proud of our freshmen," Miller said. "They shot way better than they have been in practice. I think they're going to challenge our older guys."

The Pintos participated in a match at Oak Hills Golf Course, Jefferson City, Friday, where the Jays won the match with 167. California finished with 201.

The medalist was Jefferson City's Gabe Trowbridge with 37. The runner-up was Jefferson City's Andrew Hansen with 40.

California was led by Kramel with 48. Kade McAdams shot a 49; Elliott, 50; George, 54; and Wolken, 57.

"It was a difficult course," Miller said. "It's tighter than the boys are used to playing."

Individual scores for California's JV are as follows: Ferguson, 55; Freeman and Kale McAdams, 64 each.

California's varsity will participate in a tournament at Eldon Country Club at 9 a.m. today (Wednesday).

"Initially it was supposed to be the County Cup, but this year it's just going to be the teams competing individually in a tournament," Miller said.

The Pintos will participate in a match at Eldon Friday, against Versailles and Eldon, at 4 p.m.
