Eagles defeat Dragons 16-5

The Jamestown varsity baseball team traveled to Bunceton April 8, where the Eagles defeated the Dragons 16-5.

After an even 1-1 first inning, Jamestown scored three runs in the second to lead 4-1.

After four innings, the Eagles led 7-3. Bunceton added on run in the fifth and another in the seventh, however, Jamestown scored two runs in the sixth followed by a big seven-run seventh inning to secure the win, 16-5.

The Eagles had 16 hits to the Dragons' five hits.

Andy Thompson recorded the win for Jamestown with 10 strikeouts. Christian DeVore pitched two innings and recorded three strikeouts.

Thompson led Jamestown hits with a home run, a double, three singles and four RBI. Ethan Hunziker also had a home run, as well as a double and three RBI. DeVore had a double, two singles and two RBI, and Garrett Jones recorded three singles and one RBI.

Jamestown (3-0) hosted Pilot Grove Thursday, where the Eagles suffered a loss to the Tigers in five innings, 18-3.

Colton DeVore pitched two innings and recorded four strikeouts, and Alex Gerlach pitched two innings and recorded five strikeouts.

Gerlach led Jamestown hits with three singles and one RBI. Christian DeVore had a home run and two RBI.

"We got solid contact off of their ace Trenton Young, and Colton pitched well, but we could not mentally overcome a lot of early errors and that snowballed into three bad innings," Jamestown Coach Jordan Hoecker said.

Jamestown traveled to Tuscumbia Saturday, where the Eagles lost a close contest, 1-0 to the Lions.

Colton DeVore pitched seven innings for the Eagles and recorded 10 strikeouts.

Jones led Jamestown hits with two singles. Hunziker followed with a double.

"We played well enough to win, but we left too many guys on base," Hoecker said. "The only solid hit off Colton was the home run in the sixth by Wyatt Ahart, otherwise Colton pitched a great game. We played a solid game against a very solid team. Ethan Hunziker was the potential tying run in the last inning who got thrown out at the plate by a perfect a throw from Tuscumbia's center fielder."

Following the loss to Tuscumbia Saturday, the Eagles played Northwest Hughesville, also at Tuscumbia, where Jamsestown suffered a 9-6 loss.

Gerlach pitched five innings for the Eagles and recorded 10 strikeouts.

Hunziker led Jamestown hits with two and three RBI. Thompson also had two hits. Wyatt Hunziker, Evan Knierim and Jones each recorded one hit and one RBI.

"After an extremely rough first inning, Alex Gerlach came in and shut Northwest down," Hoecker said. "The guys showed a lot of fight to claw away at the lead the entire game. I really think we just ran out of time in this one, and we could've fought all the way back if we played the full seven innings without a time limit, considering the way we were hitting and the way Alex was pitching. We are 3-3 on the year now."
