MRED board discusses membership push

The Moniteau County Regional Economic Development Council (MRED) board of directors met Wednesday, Aug. 13, at Nic Nac Cafe, California.

Executive Director Ken Parrett reported membership visits made since the last meeting, including both retention and recruitment meetings. He then discussed the need to make people more aware of the organization, its goals and achievements. He recommended every member bringing MRED up whenever it may be appropriate. With a goal of economic development in Moniteau County, MRED is an organization which can be contacted by those inquiring for availability of suitable locations for relocation or building in Moniteau County.

The more people are aware of the organization and the larger the membership, the more effective it will be in its task of local economic development. Current membership is 26. The goal is modest - five new members before the end of the year.

Parrett reported working with individuals on proposals for new businesses, business relocations and, most recently, an expansion of a Tipton restaurant equipment business. This business expansion involves a $400,000 expansion and two or three new employees.

One of the benefits of MRED is the ability to have assistance in feasibility studies. At that point the entrepreneurs may seek funding sources, or in some cases decide not to pursue the plan at that time.

Parrett updated the board on the MO Work Ready program, explaining that goals have been met for employer partners and the existing workforce. The biggest concern is the emerging employees. A three hour on-line test is necessary to earn the WorkReady Certificate. The testing is available through State Fair Community College, Sedalia, and career centers, but not locally at this time. It is also necessary to convince the young emerging workers that the test is at least valuable, if not required.

Missouri only signed on to the Work Ready program two years ago, so the knowledge of the value of it and the growth of the program is really in the beginning stages.

The board also discussed the need for a board member, since one can't participate due to a conflict.
