California City Council discusses street lighting, approves parade route

The City of California Board of Aldermen at its Monday meeting, Dec. 1, discussed street lighting along Quail Hollow Drive, Cedar Street and Country Club Estates. An explanation of the lighting by Electric Supervisor Rick Graham led to a discussion of how the street lights fit into the current and next year's budgets.

The first motion entertained by the council was to install lights only on Quail Hollow Drive this year. That motion failed for lack of a second. The motion which passed was to install street lights along Quail Hollow Drive and along Cedar Street.

Two sodium lights are to be installed along Quail Hollow Drive, to match the lights already in the area. The light types currently in use in the subdivision are to be installed along Cedar Street. There are already two along the route. Six more will be put in. An extra will be purchased to have on hand.

An electrical upgrade in Country Club Estates south of Village Green will require about 30 new streetlights. Those will be considered for next year's budget. An ordinance was approved for the Christmas Parade route. The parade entries will line up near the swimming pool on Stella Street, turn right on Owens Street, left on Patrick Street, left on Oak Street, right on South Street, then left on High Street, ending at the courthouse.

The annual audit report was presented to the Board of Aldermen by Travis Hundley, representing Gerding, Korte and Chitwood, CPA's. It was a "clean opinion." Hundley informed the council of an update in the generally accepted accounting standards number 65 which affects the bookkeeping information. The change lowers the net position in the water/sewer accounts by $61,000.

In other business, the council heard an update by Bob Gilbert, representing Bartlett and West Engineers, about the progress of several projects. The data systems well house upgrades are underway and on schedule. Work is due to begin on the foundation of the new water tower on the west side of the city. The sewer work on Kelly and Cooper Streets are out for bid. The letter and proposed south treatment plant operating permit from the Department of Natural Resources is under review. Filing for the April 7, 2015, General and Municipal Election begin at 8 a.m. Dec. 16, and end at 5 p.m. Jan 20, 2015.

Residents of Country Club Estates are invited to a meeting Tuesday, Dec. 16, 6:30 - 8:30, to review improvements and seek easements for underground wiring and streetlight placements. the meeting is at the Nutrition Center and a notary will be present.

The next regular monthly meeting will be Jan. 5.
