The California Pintos hosted Southern Boone Friday at Hawthorn Bank's Pack the Gym Night at California High School, where they defeated the Eagles 72-47.

California led 16-7 after one quarter, 28-22 at the half, and 42-25 after three quarters.

Jaden Barr led the Pintos with 14 points, followed by Dylan Albertson with 13.

"We had our moments but we could've played better, " California Coach Blair Scanlon said. "We've got to be sharper."

The Eagles were led by Skylar Jennings with 13 points.

California's JV also defeated Southern Boone, 47-30.

Previously, the Pintos participated in the Gary Filbert Classic Jan. 4 at Mexico, where they captured a 68-33 win against Steelville.

California outscored Steelville 18-5 in the first quarter, 21-10 in the second, 13-8 in the third and 16-10 in the fourth.

"We played pretty good and shot well," Scanlon said. "We needed that win after the Hermann game, which we should've won."

The Pintos hit 10 of 14 free throws and 8 of 15 3-pointers.

Barr led California with 17 points, four rebounds and four assists. Albertson had 16 points, four rebounds and five assists. Damon Shaw scored 12 points and had six rebounds.

California faced Southern Boone again Tuesday, Jan. 14, in the first round of the 80th Annual California Tournament, however, results were not available at press time. (The winner of the contest advances to semifinals of the winners' bracket at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, while the loser advances to semifinals of the losers' bracket at 9 p.m. Thursday.)

"Our goal is to win the tournament," Scanlon said. "We're feeling pretty good."

The championship game is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Saturday.

After the California Tournament, the Pintos will host the Versailles Tigers at 5 p.m. Friday, Jan. 24.
