Kander Announces Missouri State Archives will Sponsor 2014 Mid-Missouri National History Day Contest

Secretary of State Jason Kander today announced that the Missouri State Archives, a division of his office, is sponsoring the 2014 Mid-Missouri National History Day contest. Set to take place in March, the competition offers students in grades 6-12 the opportunity to research historical subjects related to this year’s theme, “Rights and Responsibilities in History.”
“I encourage all students to participate in National History Day,” Kander said. “The competition is a great opportunity for Missouri’s students to investigate our state’s rich and fascinating past.”
Participants can work by themselves or in groups to present their findings in one of five formats: exhibit, performance, documentary film, website or historical paper. The deadline for submitting documentary film, website and historical paper entries is Friday, Feb. 14, while exhibits and performances will be presented on the day of the contest, Friday, March 7.
The competition encourages students to use a variety of resources, but special emphasis is placed on primary source research. A wide range of potential materials is available through Kander’s office at www.MissouriDigitalHeritage.com and the reading room of the Missouri State Archives, located in Jefferson City.
Children attending schools in Audrain, Boone, Callaway, Cole, Cooper, Howard, Moniteau, Morgan, Osage, Pettis and Saline Counties as well as homeschooling students may participate in the Mid-Missouri regional contest. Eight other area competitions are open to students in other parts of Missouri.
Students and their parents should contact their schools to enter the competition. Sign-ups are taking place now.
