Tipton school board discusses technology

The Tipton R-VI School Board held its regular monthly meeting Monday, Nov. 10.

Superintendent Scott Jarvis informed the board that the December meeting would be Wednesday, Dec. 17.

He also reported that the technology committee has discussed the need for a full-time tech person. He plans to wait until July of next year to do this, and the matter was discussed by the board.

Under program evaluation, Junior High/High School Principal Ellen Allee gave a PowerPoint presentation with handouts covering graduate surveys. Another PowerPoint presentation by Clint Miller, Midwest Computech, highlighted projects, completed current inventory and future plans. Elementary Principal Kelly Kohler reported current enrollment for K-6 at 281, down 3 from last month, and 10 students less than October of 2013. Parent/teacher conferences Oct. 23 had a 94.6 percent parent attendance. Most of the teachers have had 100 percent contact with the parents either at the conferences or by phone.

The P.T.O. had its annual fundraiser "penny war" between the grade levels, raising $724 for the organization. The winning class, taught by Mrs. Simon, will receive a reward party for raising the most money, $58.27.

Allee reported seventh and eighth grade enrollment at 90, an increase of two from last month. High school enrollment was reported at 223, a decrease of three from last month, all sophomores.

Tipton High School and American Legion Edgar Cole Post 304 hosted the Veteran's Day Program Tuesday, Nov. 11. The program began with an opening ceremony at the circle drive at high school/junior high school entrance under the flag pole. The student council raised the flag, as an honor guard presented a Call to Attention. The National Anthem was played, a Veteran's Prayer was given by the legion Chaplain. The flag was then lowered, followed by an honor guard volley and "Taps" by Mitchell Moon.

The ceremonies continued in the gym, with a processional by the Tipton Junior High and High School Band. Student speakers were Ashtyn Higgins and Katie Franken.

Retired veteran Lt. Col. Don Koonce spoke. He served 30 years in the Missouri Army National Guard, retiring in 2006. He was deployed to Iraq in 2003, serving 17 months as commander of the 203rd Combat Heavy Battalion. Following his retirement, Koonce became a public speaker for the youth of Missouri and surrounding states.

The ceremony closed with the Tipton Chamber Choir performing "Do You Hear the People Sing."

A reception in the FACS room followed the ceremony.
