Jamestown Lady Eagles fall to Canton

The Jamestown Lady Eagles softball team lost to Canton Saturday in the Class 1 Quarterfinals at Hickman High School, Columbia.

According to Coach E.H. Hirschvogel, "This game didn't go the way we wanted it to. We put the ball in play but could never get anything strung together."

Lexi Muri and Alli Muri both had a hit for the Lady Eagles while Lexi had a stolen base.

Canton took the breath out of Jamestown in the second inning when they had two outs, the bases were loaded and they hit a double scoring 4 runs.

Hirschvogel credited Canton's pitcher and the defense behind her for the win.

Jamestown's Stephanie Birkman (13-6) took the loss giving up 9 hits and 2 walks. She had 2 strikeouts.

Hirschvogel shared, "The girls have put together an incredible season and should be proud of their accomplishments. This will be a run they remember for a long time."

On Wednesday, Oct. 15, in the first round of Class 1 Sectional play Jamestown defeated Sturgeon 4-3 at Hickman High School, Columbia.

Hirschvogel was pleased with the team effort sharing, "We played well in all 3 phases of the game. We had great pitching, good defense and timely hitting."

Darian Wolfe and Lexi Muri led the bats with two hits each. Wolfe had a double and a triple which resulted in 2 RBIs and Muri had a single and double resulting in 1 RBI.

Birkmann, Mickayla Strother and Mackenzie Strother each added a hit, and Mackenzie had three stolen bases. Birkmann's hit resulted in an RBI.

Sturgeon out hit Jamestown 8-7. Hirschvogel commented, "We were able to turn two double plays to stop Sturgeon's momentum, which was absolutely huge. We ran the bases well to keep us in scoring position throughout the game."

Sturgeon scored one run in the first inning, however Jamestown answered with 2 runs of their own.

Sturgeon came back in the second with another run to tie things up until the fifth inning when they took the lead by scoring again.

The Lady Eagles again answered by putting 2 runs on the score board in the bottom of the fifth making the score 4-3 which was the final after 7 innings.

Birkmann (13-5) was the winning pitcher going the distance, giving up 8 hits and getting 3 strikeouts.

Jamestown finished the season 17-7.
