Prairie Home captures win at Glasgow

The Prairie Home varsity softball team opened the 2014 season with a win on the road Aug. 25, as the Lady Panthers defeated Glasgow 6-3.

Makayla Zey was hot at the mound as she recorded the win for Prairie Home with nine strikeouts.

After a 2-2 second inning, Glasgow scored one run in the third to lead 3-2, however, Prairie Home scored three runs in the sixth and one in the seventh to secure the win, 6-3.

"We were sluggish early in the game, but played good the last three innings," Prairie Home Coach Glenda Scott said.

Kristen Peterson led Lady Panther hits with a single and RBI. Zey followed with a double. Amber Carmichael, Ally Small, Shianne Rhorer and Brooke Emmerich each contributed a single as well.

"Rachel Distler had a great sacrifice bunt for an RBI," Scott said.

Prairie Home hosted Harrisburg Thursday, where the Lady Panthers lost a close contest to the Lady Bulldogs 10-9.

The Lady Panthers started off with an early 6-1 lead after the first inning, however, the Lady Bulldogs scored one run in the third and two in the fourth to trail 6-4. Prairie Home added two runs in the fifth inning to lead 8-4, but Harrisburg managed six runs in the sixth inning to take the lead 10-8. The Lady Panthers added one run in the seventh, to leave the win with Harrisburg, 10-9.

"We started out well scoring six early runs," Scott said. "We had runners on base each inning, but couldn't drive them home. Our defense cost us the game. We had eight errors. Leonard, Rhorer, Peterson and Carmichael really stepped it up at the plate."

Zey recorded the loss with five strikeouts.

Madilyn Fritts recorded the win for Harrisburg with one strikeout.

Rhorer led Prairie Home hits with a double, three singles and four RBI. Kurstin Leonard followed with a double, two singles and one RBI. Josie Flood had two singles and one RBI, and Emmerich and Carmichael each had a single and one RBI. Peterson chipped in with a double.

"We had the tying run on third base," Scott said. "It was a long, hot game.'

The Lady Panthers will host the Prairie Home Tournament Saturday, Sept. 6.
