California runners open 2014 season at Jim Marshall Invitational

The California High School cross country team participated in the first meet of the season Saturday at the Jim Marshall Invitational at Jefferson City, where the Lady Pintos brought home a trophy after finishing the small schools division in second place behind Fatima.

Individual medalists for the Lady Pintos included Katie Imhoff, who led California with 22:50 to finish in seventh place; Jasmine Wells, 12th place with 23:25; Savanna Qualls, 17th with 24:45; and Halle Oliver, 18th with 24:47.

Medaling for the Pintos were Adam Burkett and Micaiah Garcia. Burkett finished seventh with 18:14, and Garcia placed 20th with 19:47.

'It's always good to get the first meet out of the way to see where we are and to give our new runners the racing experience," California Head Coach Kenny Goans said. "Most of the experienced runners' times were better than last year, so we are off to a better start this season. I was excited to see some new faces running a solid race this year. Along with four freshmen, we've added three seniors to the team - Jasmine Wells, Jacob Collier and Alex Higginbotham."

California will compete at the Linn Meet Saturday, Sept. 13, beginning at 9 a.m.
