The California High School softball teams hosted Eugene Monday night, where California's varsity suffered a tough 13-1 loss to the Lady Eagles in five innings.

Eugene got off to an early 3-0 lead after the first inning, then added one run in the third, followed by a seven-run fourth inning to lead 11-0.

The Lady Pintos scored their sole run of the night in the fourth inning, when freshman Braleigh Johnson hit a single, which drove sister Paige Johnson home.

The Lady Eagles added two runs in the fifth inning to secure a 13-1 win.

Lexi Dickerson pitched the first three innings for Eugene and struck out seven, while Taylor Hogard pitched the fourth and fifth innings, and recorded one strikeout.

A highlight for California was a double play made in the fifth inning, in which third baseman Jenna Reynolds snatched up a Eugene hit and made the throw to Sam Beckham at first base to claim the out, then Beckham made the throw to catcher Kaylee VanLoo, who tagged the Eugene runner out at the home plate.

"That's the kind of stuff we work on at practice," California Coach Leah Urich said.

Braleigh Johnson led California hits with a single and RBI. Madelyn Jobe had two singles, and Paige Johnson contributed a single as well.

California's JV lost 15-0 to Eugene in three innings.

The Lady Pintos will play at Versailles Thursday, beginning with the varsity game at 5 p.m.
