Positive changes are taking place in the Historic District of California as new businesses open and buildings are being renovated. The California Historic District organization was established nearly two years ago to create a vibrant "downtown" historic district. These volunteers have been busy behind the scenes working toward this goal.

However, the roots of change began several years ago when a group of progressive citizens formed "California Progress, Inc." CPI is an organization that has renovated dilapidated buildings in the historic district and then turned them over to not-for-profit organizations that provide services which enrich the community. The board's many accomplishments include renovation of the Cultural Heritage Center building, the Smith-Burke Park, the Moniteau County Library @ Wood Place building, and the Finke Theatre.

In 2012, the CPI, Inc. board agreed to join the Missouri Main Street organization, an affiliate of the Missouri Department of Economic Development (MDED), to encourage interest in the revitalization of the historic district in California.

The California Historic District was formed based on principals developed by the Main Street Organization. Four committees were formed to implement these principles: Organization, Promotions, Economic Restructuring and Design.

The Design Committee is working to change the physical image of the historic district to create an inviting atmosphere in the "district".

One of the committee's current projects is to place ten large planters filled with beautiful seasonal planting during the 2014 fall season. The large planters are 35"x15"x15" and are made of commercial grade plastic. Anyone can sponsor a planter for $300, which would include two seasonal plantings.

You may also choose to sponsor only the planter for $200.

Sponsors will be recognized with a plaque on the planter. The planters and seasonal plantings are provided by Longfellow's Garden Center.
