California bands present spring concert

The Spring Concert of the California bands was held Monday, March 23, at the CHS auditorium.

The concert began with the Guitar Methods class. To start the concert, the entire class played "Happy Birthday" after Director Dustijn Hollon called for a show of hands of everyone in the audience whose birthday was that day. Next, different groups from the class performed different songs before the entire group closed their set with "She'll Be Coming "Round the Mountain."

After the Guitar Methods class left the stage, seniors recognized for their service to the band were Allan Burger, Sam Clenin, Alondra Garcia, Ramiro Garcia, Kyle Lee, Miranda Matthews, Gavin Pickering, Shayne Ross, Taylor Vines and Rudy Wirts.

Recognition was then given to the band and the different soloists and small ensembles were recognized for their performances at conference and district music contests.

The High School Band then took the stage and performed several selections, including: "United Nations March," "Korean Folk Rhapsody," "John Williams in Concert," "Jungle Dance," and "You'll Never Walk Alone." The first two were district performance selections.

At the conclusion of the High School Band's performance, Sarah Bryant performed a piano solo, after which the first soloists and ensembles performed. Samantha Davis performed a marimba solo "Parody," followed by Jacob Small's euphonium solo "Beautiful Colorado," Matt Hurt's alto sax solo "Yellow After the Rain," Kyle Clenin's trumpet solo "Trumpet Tune," the percussion trio's (Kyle Lee, Shayne Ross and Rudy Wirts) "Three Way Split," and Macaiah Garcia's tuba solo "Gavotte."

Next up, the Competition Drumline performed "Falcon" and "Bump," then the Sixth Grade Concert Band took the stage to perform "School Spirit," "Egyptian Dance," "El Capitan," "Minuet," and "American Patrol." Gregory Schroeter played a piano solo while the Junior High Concert Band took the stage to play "Aztec Celebration," "Jet Stream," "March Bits and Pieces" and "Conundrum."

Hollon presented awards to the sixth, seventh and eighth graders. Sixth grade awards were: Most Valuable Player - Israel Lovins; Most Improved Player - Kyla Sweeney; Band Spirit Award - William Pickering; and Director's Choice Award - Bryson Hoskins. Seventh Grade Awards were: Most Valuable Player - Charlie Turner; Most Improved Player - Darby Hudson; Band Spirit Award - Tucker Friedmeyer; Marcher of the Year - Rian Lee; and Director's Choice Award - Jacob Bleich. Eighth Grade Awards were: Most Valuable Player - David Cisneros; Most improved Player - Yaneli Banda; Band Spirit Award - Nathan Pickering; Marcher of the Year - Colton Foss; and Director's Choice Award - Justus Garcia.
