California golf in full swing

Doug Miller's squad enters the 2015 season looking to build off last year, and while Miller says his team is young, inexperience isn't an issue with his top players. The Pintos returned two seniors from last year's team.

"We were young last year," said Miller. "My No. 2 guy was out with a hurt knee, however, Dylan (Kramel) was a freshman and had a great season. He advanced to sectionals."

Liam Schatzer (Fr.), Damon Shaw (Sr.) and Kade McAdams (Sr.) join Kramel among the scoring leaders for the Pintos. Kramel - who's only a sophomore - led the team with a score of 44 in their dual against Boonville last week. Shatzer shot a 45, Shaw a 48 and McAdams didn't participate.

"We have four solid players this year and four young players that will contribute from time-to-time," said Miller. "The short-term goals are to finish in the top two in conference and hopefully advance three kids to sectionals."

The Pintos fell to Boonville 180 to 187. Boonville was led by last year's state champion, Brett Windser who shot a 35.

California did start the season off with a win against Versailles, New Bloomfield and Russellville in a tournament on its home-course. Shaw earned medalist honors and Schatzer placed second.

"I was very pleased with our scores, and that was on our home course," said Miller. "The second match, we didn't do quite as well. I believe there is still a lot of room for improvement."

The rest of the 2015 roster also includes: Kale McAdams (So.), Luke Freeman (So.), Dustin Ferguson (So.), Caleb Biech (Fr.), Liam Glenn (Fr.) and Mattew Hurt (Fr.).
