Jordan Hoecker's squad is looking to turn the corner this season by winning the district title. But that doesn't mean they're not staying focused on every game.

"Short-term goals are for us to just keep progressing, just getting better every day," said Hoecker. "We're really focusing on improvement every day, and we're doing that."

Hoecker is in his second season with the Eagles, and he's trying to improve from their 7-10 record last year. They are 8-1 as of Tuesday morning.

"Last year we were alright, had some ups and downs," said Hoecker. "We beat the teams we were suppose to beat, didn't exactly compete with the teams we should be competing with. But we're starting to turn that corner."

So far, they've had impressive results. Jamestown started the year off with a win over New Bloomfield, a team that just won the Calvary Lutheran/New Bloomfield Invitational.

The Eagles' first loss came against conference foe Pilot Grove.

"Our one conference loss was definitely a game where we weren't mentally in the whole time," Hoecker said. "That's why our focus has to be mentally in it."

Staying mentally focused is something they'll have to do, because they have the offense and the pitching to be competitive in every game they play.

Garrett Wolfe is leading the team with an impressive .535 batting average. He also has four home runs and 18 RBI. Evan Knierim is behind him with a .379 batting average and nine runs scored. In total, The Eagles have four players batting better than .300.

Wolfe has pitched the most innings, working 20 innings in three starts and four appearances. He's 2-0 on the mound this season, with a 1.05 earned run average. Christian DeVore threw a no-hitter last week in his first start of the season and Alex Gerlach and Colton DeVore have also made appearances. Gerlach's ERA is sitting at 1.84 and Colton DeVore's ERA is a solid 1.75 as of Monday.

Hoecker also believes the fall season played a huge part in this team's early season success.

"This fall we made a lot of good strides, tying for the conference championship," said Hoecker. "The guys are starting to buy in. We need to keep working towards it, but they're buying in on the process."

The Eagles only lost two starters from last year's squad, and they added a couple of freshmen who are already making a huge impact.

Wolfe and Austin Flippin are the top two freshmen on the team. Flippin is batting .333.

"They're doing a great job of filling in," said Hoecker. "They have good work ethics and they know the game of baseball, and they're bringing that into the program and are helping the team out. The older guys are helping to guide them."

Winning districts is the ultimate prize, but for now, it's to stay focus in each and every game.

"We obviously want to win districts this year. We're working towards it," Hoecker said. "We have to keep on this path if we want to do it."
