California softball starts season 2-1

Marshall 12, Lady Pintos 7

California dropped its opening game of the Marshall tournament on Saturday, allowing eight runs in the third inning after jumping out to a 5-1 lead.

Destiny Cook and Braleigh Johnson led the team with two hits a piece. Cook batted 2-for-2 with a double, a triple and three RBI. Johnson was 2-for-3 with two singles.

Lady Pintos 12, Slater 11

The Lady Pintos got their first win of the season in the second game of the tournament, defeating Slater in the sixth inning.

Slater scored four runs in the top of the first inning, but California cut the lead to 4-2 in the bottom half of the inning, then scored four in the second to take a 6-4 lead.

The two teams scored two runs a piece in the third, then Slater scored three in the fourth inning and two in the fifth. California was able to tie the game in the bottom half of the two innings, then found themselves down by one run in the sixth inning.

With the score 11-10 in favor of Slater, Cook scored on a passed ball to tie the game, and Paige Johnson doubled in the winning run.

Braleigh Johnson and Cook each had another two-hit game, with Braleigh hitting two doubles and Cook had a single and a double.

Lady Pintos 4, Fayette 3

Kaitlyn Turner pitched six innings of one-hit ball, leading California to a 4-3 win over Fayette to end the tournament with a win.

After taking a 2-1 lead after the second inning, the Lady Pintos scored once in the fifth and again in the sixth to edge Fayette.

Braleigh Johnson had two hits for the third-straight game, this time via singles, and Paige Johnson, Cook, Jenna Reynolds and Ashlyn Moore all had one hit.
