Lady Cardinals seek redemption in district semifinals

With revenge on its mind, the Tipton girls basketball team will get another crack at Russellville in the district tournament.

Tipton, the No. 1 seed, faces No. 4 Russellville at 6 p.m. today in the Class 2, District 8 semifinals at Russellville. Tipton lost to the Lady Indians, 64-59, in last year's district semifinals.

"We're very excited," Lady Cardinals head coach Jason Culpepper said. "We owe them one."

Tipton appears to have a significant advantage. The Lady Cardinals began 24-0 before losing their regular-season finale to Class 3 North Callaway. Russellville brings a 5-20 record into today's matchup.

"I'm excited to still be playing," Lady Indians head coach David Volkart said.

Tipton beat No. 8 Belle, 87-35, in Monday's opening round. Junior guard Destiny Dowell finished with 20 points and seven assists, while senior forward Ashton Pace added 19 points and senior center Paige Baker had 16 points and 18 rebounds.

Russellville opened with a 57-33 victory over No. 5 Linn. Senior guard Adrianna Basnett had 16 points, while senior Justice Miller and sophomore McKendra Fischer each scored 14.

Class 1, District 9 girls tournament

Rivals Prairie Home and Jamestown will meet for the fourth time this season, as both teams won Monday's district openers. Prairie Home, the No. 2 seed, beat No. 7 Bunceton, 49-22. Third-seed Jamestown got past No. 6 St. Elizabeth, 56-45.

Prairie Home, which is 3-0 against Jamestown this season, faces the Lady Eagles at 7:30 p.m. today in the semifinal round at Jamestown. The winner advances to the championship final at 7 p.m. Friday.
