RUSSELLVILLE - One bad quarter can make the difference between a win and loss.
Unfortunately for the Russellville boys basketball team, a bad first quarter was too much to overcome Saturday night in a 78-63 loss to Vienna.
The visiting Eagles raced out to a commanding 23-6 advantage, which angered Indians head coach Zane Garr.
"Our kids were not ready to play, that's the bottom line," he said. "We did a very poor job executing the game plan. Anytime you give a team like Vienna a big lead, it's going to be tough. We played well the rest of the game, but in the first quarter, they didn't come out ready to play."
Russellville, which outscored the Eagles 20-19 in the second quarter, continued to chip away at the deficit, getting within 52-44 after senior Zach Voss' 3-pointer late in the third quarter. The Indians stayed within eight points, 56-48, early in the fourth quarter, but Vienna responded with a 7-0 run to regain the momentum.
"Beyond the first quarter, we played great," Garr said. "Honestly, I thought we were going to win the game. We didn't come back, but we were chipping away."
