The Moniteau County Library at Wood Place was one of 15 libraries in the state selected out of 165 by the Missouri State Library to receive a LEGO toolkit, containing more than 10,000 of the bricks and an activity guide.

The LEGO donation is from partnership between LEGO Systems and the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC).

On Tuesday, Dec. 30, The Junior Maker Program was held for children from kindergarten to third grade at 2 p.m. and at for fourth grade through eighth grade students at 6:30 p.m. During the hour-long programs the children used their creative skills to build and create from their imagination and from 15 books. Each of the programs was limited to 25 children to allow everyone to have plenty of LEGOS to build with.

The donation of 10,000 LEGOS created a need for six sets of sorting cases, 25 building base plates, and 15 books which were underwritten by the E.M. Burger Foundation. The program was held in the Bolinger Room, a past donation of Buddy and Nancy Bolinger. Several completed LEGO projects were on display.

In addition to parents and other family members and library staff members , the young people were assisted by volunteers Emily Bilyeu and Holly Winkler.

It is considered likely that this library was selected for the program because of the Early Literacy Activity Center upstairs. Anyone who would like to donate unused LEGOS which are still on hand, or DUPLOS for younger children, contact the library at 573-796-2642 or email at [email protected].
