Light July agenda for school board meeting

Approval of the June payroll, the bills for July and the minutes of the previous meeting topped the agenda for the July 15 meeting of the California R-I School Board meeting.

The board, meeting in the library media room, also approved additional items to be sold at the public auction, which was Saturday, July 18. Items sold included some old bleachers, several pieces of chain link fence, tools and other surplus items.

The board also approved district goals for the coming school year, the Mentor / Professional Development Handbook and the new Random Drug Testing Policy. The drug testing policies of several similar-sized school districts were considered before the new policy was developed and adopted. The testing will involve random testing of students involved in MSHAA approved activities. More information will be provided later.

The program of the 230 Chrome Books being acquired this year to be used by science classes was discussed. This is a first step towards obtaining Chrome Books for all middle and high school students, to be done in the next three years.

The topic of MOREnet was also brought up. MOREnet (Missouri Research and Education Network) is a research and education consortium of nearly 800 members including public school districts, public libraries, higher education institutions and other affiliated organizations. When it started, it focused on Internet service delivery. Now, it is a member organization offering and supporting technology resources the members believe are needed.

Also discussed was the need to complete the concrete work at the new baseball/softball field. The goal is to have the work done by Aug. 15. The school is working with the booster clubs to achieve this goal.

The next meeting is set for Aug. 19, at the high school media library room.
