A few brave Boy Scouts from Troop 120 took to the woods Saturday afternoon for a short hike and lessons in dutch oven cooking. During their hike, they found an abandoned cabin where they decided to stop and sleep for the night. After stowing away their gear, the scouts warmed up with mouth-watering biscuits baked in their dutch ovens. After that appetizer, they cooked chili and cornbread in two other ovens for the second course. They ended their meal with a hot peach cobbler topped with a 7-up yellow cake. During the cooking of this feast, it started to snow which prompted the scouts to build a roaring bonfire to ward off the 25 degree weather. After supper, the troop took refuge in the cabin where they spent the night in relative warmth until the next morning when they had to hike through the four inches of snow to get back to their vehicles.

The Scouts brave enough to camp in the cold temperatures where Kyle Freiner, Daniel Johnson, Travis Barbour, Lane Schuster, Gregory Schroeter and fellow scouter Gavin McKee from Troop 12. Leaders Eric Schroeter and Scott Jobe are happy to report that no one fell through the ice during the campout and are grateful to Schroeter for keeping the fire going during the night.

The high temperature reported by the official temperature gauge mounted on the cabin wall was 48 degrees at 5:30 a.m. The troop is now looking forward to going to the Lake of the Ozark State Park in March to participate in various service projects to the the park ready for the summer.
