Exciting racing action was the name of the game at the annual Pinewood Derby for California Cub Scout Pack 120 on Saturday, March 7.
Twelve Cub Scouts spent several weeks designing and building cars which all begin as an official pine wood block. Participants must use official wheels, meet length, height and width requirements as well as ensure the car weights 5.0 ounces or less. Beyond those few rules, the design of a car is as unlimited as a young man's imagination. Scouts design, shape, sand and paint the cars in anyway they wish with a bit of guidance from an adult.
The 2015 fleet brought varied designs including Superman, the General Lee, Minecraft, a snake, a camouflage truck, and the ever-popular patriotic theme. Cub Scouts vote anonymously on their favorite design and for the second year in a row, the Best of Show trophy went to the creation of Dillon Wood (Bear)!
Tiger Den results were 1st Zaden Walk, 2nd Noah Boguski and 3rd Reece Mitchell. Wolf Den results were 1st Salvatore Vasquez and 2nd Gabriel Mills. Bear Den results were 1st Walker Friedmeyer, 2nd Dillon Wood and 3rd Kade Garrison. Webelos Den results were 1st Diego Vasquez and 2nd Jerron Burns.
Also trying their design and racing skills this year were three siblings and one adult. In the Sibling Race, Audrey Pritchard (sibling of Zaden, Tiger and Landon, Bear) captured 1st place with Tucker Friedmeyer coming in 2nd and Cory Friedmeyer (both siblings of Walker, Bear) bringing home 3rd after a close finish between brothers. The lone competitor in the adult race was Cubmaster Brad Friedmeyer so naturally he brought home 1st place.
Next on the schedule was the Pack 120 Championship Race where the winner of each Den went head to head. Cars on the track for this contest belonged to Tiger Champ Zaden Walk, Wolf Champ Salvatore Vasquez, Bear Champ Walker Friedmeyer and Webelos Champ Diego Vasquez. After many close heat races, Walker Friedmeyer was ultimately declared the 2015 Pinewood Derby Pack 120 Champion.
The group of 10 Pack 120 trophy winners is now eligible to advance to the Five Rivers District Pinewood Derby to be held March 21 at the Blair Oaks Middle School Gym.
