Mother's Day low-key for busy mom

Mother's Day is a very low-key day for Kimberly Scheidt. She gets together with her family and they have a big meal.

And that is really a change for Scheidt, who otherwise leads a very busy life. She and husband Wesley, who will celebrate their ninth anniversary in July, have two very young daughters, Everley and Rowyn.

But for this couple, life has always been busy. Kimberly began working as a part-time bank teller while in college, eventually earning a bachelors degree in Interior Design. After graduation, she continued at the bank, eventually rising to assistant manager.

Scheidt had been at the bank for 10 years, Everley was two and Rowyn was on the way. Scheidt decided on a career change when she was not able to spend the time she wanted with her family. "The 60 hours a week wasn't working," she said.

She is still a very busy working mom, but it is more on her own agenda.

In 2010, Scheidt started a small gift boutique open on Saturdays. About a year ago, she moved her business to larger premises. Now she has moved to even larger quarters, expanding the hours and the services offered - including a coffee shop. Presently, the business - Inspired Designs - is open on the corner of Oak Street and Patrick Street three days a week - Friday, Saturday and Monday.

She also rents her business space for small special events, such as youth tea parties and ladies nights.

In addition to all of that, she is presently a substitute teacher at California Elementary School, as well as working part-time at the YMCA gymnasium nursery, Jefferson City.

Although it might be tempting to question whether she has any spare time, Scheidt still manages to find the time to do some custom work. Instead of designing in the home, which is what her degree is in, she designs accessories for the house.

She actually has some time for hobbies, which are painting, crafting and sewing - all of which fall very well in her business, since she likes to share them with other people. "It's all about balance and always having time for family," Scheidt said.

What does she plan for Mothers' Day? The low-key part of time with family has already been mentioned, but always having an eye towards hobbies to share with others, Scheidt plans a pre-Mother's Day sale of gourmet cupcakes at the gift shop.

The biggest question may be - "What kind of gift does one give to a person who is so busy?"

Scheidt had the answer ready, and said it is a hint for Wesley - a gift certificate for manicure and pedicure or other personal pampering.
