Tipton R-VI School Board approves Cross Country

Information was presented regarding the Tipton R-VI summer school program to the school board at the May 11 meeting held at the Board of Education office.

The Summer School Adventure will be a 19-day program "offering an enriching curriculum focusing on Reading, Writing, Math, Communication Arts and many different activities." The program will run from May 26 to June 19, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. There are 179 students enrolled.

Superintendent Scott Jarvis informed the board of several items of importance, including the school lunch prices and bus transportation issues.

Jarvis explained that, according to the USDA cost calculating tool, the lunch prices would have to be increased by 10 cents for the 2015-16 school year. The board approved the school meal prices as presented. Lunch prices will be as follows: K through six lunch - $1.90; 7 through 12 lunch - $2.15; reduced price lunch - 40 cents; adult lunch - $2.35; extra lunch entrees - $1. Breakfast prices are: student breakfast - $1; reduced price breakfast - 30 cents; extra breakfast entrees - 75 cents; adult breakfast - $1.30; extra milk - 35 cents.

The board was presented an update on the situation with transportation and Jarvis explained that the district is doing everything possible to keep the buses and personnel for transportation. He informed the board of the possibility of offering a bus license stipend to school staff members to encourage some to become licensed bus drivers for the district. In addition, the board approved Jarvis doing a Request For Proposal on outsourcing the school transportation department in order to get actual figures just in case outsourcing becomes necessary.

Two sports items were on the agenda. The first, girls and boys Cross Country, was a continuation of the discussion from a previous meeting. Following a lengthy discussion, a vote was taken with the program approved by a vote of 5-2.

Under new business, a second sports item was on the agenda - girl's golf. Following a lengthy discussion, a move to approve girl's golf for the 2015-16 school year failed by a vote of 6-1.

Jarvis presented an update on several items related to the recently approved $1.8 million bond issue and explained the planned maintenance and improvements to the football field are not part of the bond issue.

Elementary Principal Kelly Kohler reported current enrollment for k-6 at 283. Junior High / High School Principal Ellen Allee reported seventh and eighth grade enrollment at 89. High school enrollment was reported at 221.
