Nathan Squires of California releases a throw on his way to winning the Class 3 state title in the shot put Saturday at Dwight T. Reed Stadium in Jefferson City.

With California and Liberty: Mountain View tied for fourth in the Class 3 standings with just one event left, Nathan Squires of California and Liberty's Cale Cornman battled it out in shot put to break the tie.

But Squires handled the competition easily, out-throwing the second-place finisher - Palmrya's Matt Frankenback - by more than six feet to give the Pintos sole possession of fourth and the trophy.

"Going into it, I had no idea," Squires said. "After prelims were over, I went up to talk to my teammates before the finals and they told me. It's a pretty great feeling."

The senior landed a 57- foot, 6-inch effort on his first attempt, which allowed him to cruise to victory.

California's Josh Woodruff was easily the busiest athlete in a Pinto uniform, competing in three events on Saturday. Woodruff finished second in the 200-meter dash and third in the 100-meters.

"This is my fourth time running against Lance (Molz of El Dorado Springs), and it always happens," Woodruff said after his 200-meter race. "During the last 100 meters, he just comes around me. I'll give it to him, he's a hard worker and deserved it."

After finishing near the top of the 110-meter hurdles, Woodruff was disqualified because he clipped one of his hurdles and it knocked over another sprinter.

"That was definitely disappointing," Woodruff said. "But I can't really do anything about it now. I feel sorry for the kid from Owensville that I knocked over."

Dylan Norton matched his brother Drew's efforts from Friday, breaking a school record. He ran a 39.80 in the 300-meter hurdles, finishing in fifth.

"I attacked the hurdles a lot better today," Norton said. "It still wasn't a perfect race, but it was good enough."

In other results, Walker Borghardt placed fifth in long jump and Adam Burkett finished 14th in the 3,200-meter run.

The Pintos' 4x800-meter relay team made up two spots on the final lap to earn all-state honors by taking eighth.

Southern Boone's Hannah Crow had herself a day, placing third in the Class 3 300-meter hurdles and fourth in the 100-meter hurdles.

"I was tired, but I felt good," Crow said after her 300-meter hurdle run. "I noticed out of the blocks I had a slower start. I just had to extend my stride longer on the last 150 (meters)."

Southern Boone's 4x400-meter relay team placed third later in the day.

Brooke Trammell, Abby LeCure and Trel' Shawn Smith made up the remainder of the team.
