2015 Tax bills for Moniteau County to be mailed

The 2015 Moniteau County taxes will be mailed out Friday, Oct. 30. The real estate tax will be collected for 2015 amounts to $6,532,018.42 and the personal tax will be $2,362,941.09. Railroad and Utility tax is $1,657,571.53. As of March 1, 2015, the back tax books showed $855,667.25 still on the books. Over 65 percent of these have been collected. This amount includes real estate and personal for three back years.

The Collector's office also collects for the Overton-Woolridge Levee District which includes the levee amount and pump equipment. There are eight taxpayers in Moniteau County that pays into this district. This amount is $8,256. The Missouri Conservation Department pays $6,133.28 in lieu of tax. The collector's office also collects for merchants and or manufacturer's licenses. The licenses are $25 and another $25 if the business is also a manufacturer. To obtain your merchant's license, you need to bring a copy of the state sales tax number from the Department of Revenue. Merchant's licenses are required to be displayed in the business. The Missouri Department of Revenue may randomly check to see that the business is in compliance with the laws. The merchants license are due Dec. 31 of each year. Moniteau County collects over 250 licenses. The collector's office is also responsible for collection and issuing auctioneer licenses. These run $52 annually. You may get auctioneer license for one month up to one year.

All bills, including those in escrow by the mortgage companies, are sent to the taxpayer. It is the responsibility of the taxpayer to see that the real estate bills are forwarded on to their mortgage company. Real estate and personal bills are two separate bills and are both due Dec. 31 of the year. If not paid by Dec. 31, there are penalties which are added to the bill.

Online payments are being taken for the first time this year. You may pay with e-check with a fee of $2.50 and a 2.5 percent to use your credit or debit card. If paying online paid tax receipts will be mailed for the collectors office within two business days for credit and debit card payments and within seven business days for e-check payments to allow funds to clear. The website to use is www.moniteaucountycollector.com. You may also pay your taxes by Visa, Mastercard or Discover if paying in the office or mailing your taxes. There is a charge of 2.9 percent to use your card when paying in the office or if you mail it in. Forms are mailed out with the tax bills. When mailing in your bills, be sure to mail the whole page and we will mail back a receipt marked "paid". If you owe prior year's taxes, the delinquent years will print on the front of the bill. We cannot accept the current year's taxes, until all back taxes are paid. If you have delinquent taxes for 2013 in real estate, these properties will be coming up for the annual tax sale, which is held every fourth Monday in August. To avoid a tax sale these taxes need to be paid by July 1 to avoid sale. It is the taxpayers responsibility to know what property they own and what years are due.
