Jockey Calvin Borel celebrates atop Rachel Alexandra after winning the Woodward Stakes horse race at Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., Saturday, Sept. 5, 2009.

California brought Sophie Brant and Renee Roberts to the outings.

"It's nice to go out and play different courses," said third year coach Ashley Atteberry. "Especially at Old Hawthorne. The greens were extremely tough."

Brant placed third with a 45 in the nine-hole tournament at Meadow Lake Acres, and Roberts finished fifth with a 48. Jefferson City and Eldon also participate in the tournament.

"I think Sophie and Renee played pretty consistent with where they usually start the season at," said Atteberry. "It's a different vibe than practice and playing on your own course. I think they did a pretty good job at managing the course, and it's a course we're going to be playing (today), so it's good practice."

The Lady Pintos matched up against Boonville, Paris and Centralia at Old Hawthorne, playing 18 holes. Brant earned medalist honors with an 88, and Roberts finished fourth overall.

"Old Hawthorne is a very tough course for precise shots," Atteberry said. "Sophie played amazing for the today. Renee, she took fourth and had some up and down moments."

California's tournament at home yesterday and the Helias Invitational that is today will be covered in next Wednesday's California Democrat.
