Wolken continues to improve for Pintos

Sophomore quarterback Jacob Wolken is doing exactly what a sophomore quarterback is suppose to do in his first season as starter. That is to improve week-by-week, and in return, California as a team is doing the same thing.

Wolken entered the the game in the second quarter against Boonville in week one, and the Pintos sputtered on offense with only 100 yards of total offense. He completed 2-of-5 passes for eight yards, an interception and two fumbles.

While his numbers weren't all that better in week two against Mexico, he at least proved he could complete some passes. He passed for 33 yards on 7-for-11 passing with two interceptions.

"Since I got moved to starting quarterback, I'm getting better," Wolken said. "The better I play, the greater I'm starting to get looked up to. I know I have to take my leadership role. ..."

Finally, California was able to get into the win column in week three, a 42-0 shutout of Versailles. Wolken completed 6-of-9 passes for 155 yards and a touchdown.

Despite starting 10-of-15 with 107 yards in California's first half against Eldon, the offense only had two drives where they moved the ball effectively.

"I thought he was a little shaky in the first half, but he came out in the second half and threw the ball really well," California head coach Marty Albertson said.

Wolken finished the come-from-behind win with 302 yards on 19-for-29 passing and five touchdowns to continue his upward trajectory on the season.

"Jacob was on-point," senior Landon Mouse said after Friday night's game. "He played awesome. I love that kid. He works hard every day at practice and we put all our trust into him. He comes through every time. We love Wolken, he's a good quarterback and we just made plays for him."
