Annual citywide cleanup starts Monday

The City of California annual residential cleanup will be this coming week from Monday, April 11 through Friday, April 15.

As part part of this city function that has been happening for the past 20-plus years, crews from the trash, sanitation and parks department will start picking up curbside trash at 6 a.m. It is encouraged that items for collection be placed in in boxes or trash bags.

"It will allow people to discard items without getting charged extra," said Sanitation Superintendent Victor Maurer. "It's a cost-benefit for the citizens."

In addition to having multiple departments help facilitate the cleanup, a truck from Jefferson City will also be coming in. For at least Monday and Tuesday, three trucks will be on hand to assist with the cleanup.

Large item pickup, which includes appliances, furniture and trimmed brush up to 4 inches in diameter, should also be placed at curbside. Any old lumber or metal must be cut into 4-foot lengths and tied into bundles for accessibility of the packer truck.

"This is a big program for the city, but it's starting to ease up a bit," Maurer said. "People have found other ways to get rid of stuff, whether it's selling the items or repurposing them. Usage of the program has dropped off a bit over the last few years."

Items that cannot be picked up are leaves, grass clippings, yard waste, hazardous or flammable household liquids, unclean paint cans, automobile parts including tires and batteries, rocks, bricks or concrete.

The schedule for pickup of all included in curbside collection will be as follows:

• Monday, April 11 - North of Highway 50.

• Tuesday, April 12 - South of Highway 50.

• Wednesday, April 13 - No pickup.

• Thursday, April 14 - North of Highway 50 (anything that was missed).

• Friday, April 15 - South of Highway 50 (anything that was missed)
