Lady Pintos defeated by Battle in consolation game

The Lady Pintos had a stretch of more than eight minutes without scoring in the second half, which allowed Battle to lead by as many as 13 points before winning 40-31.

Two key factors contributed to the drought: turnovers and Battle center Maya Mouton.

California turned the ball over nine times during the scoreless stretch.

"They are long, they are athletic, they did some things to us that other teams haven't," California coach Bobby Sangster said. "They started jumping passes."

A pair of Elizabeth Lutz free throws with 4:34 remaining in the third quarter gave California a 24-23 lead, but the Lady Pintos didn't score again until there was 4:26 left in the game.

During that stretch, Battle scored 14 points to take a 37-24 lead.

Mouton got Battle's 14-0 run started with a three-point play and a steal later turned into a layup for Jerrica Key to put Battle up 29-24 with 1:47 remaining in the third quarter.

Mouton had 10 points, nine rebounds and four blocks for Battle.

"She's athletic, she's long, she's quick," Sangster said. "I'm impressed with what I've seen from her all week long."

A three-point play for Key capped off the third-quarter scoring to extend Battle's lead to 31-24.

Neither team scored in the fourth quarter until the 5:48 mark when Cedre Lee stole the ball and got an easy layup.

Lee got another steal and layup about 20 seconds later.

Marea Brown capped off Battle's run with a layup at the 4:48 mark.

California ended its drought with 4:26 remaining in the game, but only managed two inside baskets from Cameron Meyer and an Ashtyn Goans free throw the rest of the game.

California kept it close for much of the game, only trailing by four twice before Battle's 14-0 run in the second half.

Battle led 4-0 in the first few minutes of the game and 21-17 at halftime.

Lutz got California within one after a 3-pointer from the wing with 6:56 remaining in the third quarter. Lutz led the Lady Pintos with 14 points and seven rebounds.

Her layup 36 seconds later put California on top, 22-21.

"My girls, I'm so proud of them," Sangster said. "They walked out there and everyone had a three- or four-inch height disadvantage to Battle and you've got to use your speed and quickness. Tonight was size and speed against speed and quickness, and the size and speed won out."

A second-chance basket for Mouton gave Battle the lead back with 5:56 remaining in the third quarter.

Early on, California was able to answer any time Battle tried to build a lead.

Down 6-3 in the first quarter, Meyer hit a short jumper to get the Lady Pintos back within one.

The Lady Spartans took a 13-10 into the second quarter, but Mara Caudel passed the ball out to Lutz on the wing for a 3-pointer to tie the game with 7:11 remaining in the first half.

The lead changed seven times before Battle's 14-0 run.
