Moniteau County endorses Sanders, Cruz in primary

40.3 percent voter turnout

A significant number of registered voters from Moniteau County cast their ballots in Missouri's Presidential Preference Primary on March 15. The primary drew 3,728 of Moniteau County's 9,242 registered voters to the polls - 40.3 percent of all registered voters in the county.

On the Democratic ballot, Bernie Sanders received 409 votes (53.67 percent). Hillary Clinton came in second with 340 votes (44.62 percent). Seven other candidates on the ballot split the 10 additional votes. Three voters remained uncommitted.

On the Republican ballot, Ted Cruz received 1,374 votes (46.4 percent), while Donald J. Trump took 1,144 (38.6 percent), John R. Kasich garnered 218 (7.36 percent) and Marco Rubio took 141 (4.76 percent). The other eight candidates divided an additional 74 votes. Ten voters remained uncommitted.

On the Libertarian ballot, there were four votes cast, two for Austin Petersen, one for Steven Elliott (Steve) Kerbelyne and one uncommitted. There were no candidates listed on the Constitution Party ballot, and no votes were cast.

The number of registered Moniteau County voters for 2016 is down by 463 from 2012. It might also be noted that in the 2008 presidential primary, 44.7 percent of the county's voters selected the Democratic ballot and 55.3 percent chose the Republican ballot; this year, 20.4 percent took the Democratic ballot versus the 79.4 percent who picked the Republican ballot.
