City use tax on local ballot

The cities of California and Tipton are joining a number of other municipalities in again placing the use tax on the April 4 ballot.

The use tax was approved previously and funds have been collected, but rewording of legislation requires it to be approved again by voters.

Passing this local use tax proposition will permit the cities of California and Tipton to continue collecting the tax on the titling of motor vehicle, trailers, boats and outboard motors purchased from a source other than a licensed Missouri dealer.

The use tax does not apply to purchases already subject to a local sales tax. A purchaser does not pay both a sales tax and a use tax on the same purchase.

In the city of California, use tax funds collected are projected to average about $30,000 annually.
