The California R-I School administrators presented the end-of-the-year reports to school board at the monthly meeting June 29 in the high school library media room.

Summer school ended June 18. There were 280 in attendance in the elementary classes, 47 in middle school and 390 in the high school level summer school classes.

Elementary School Principal Daniel Williams said, "An all-day summer school program was provided for pre-K to fifth-grade students."

Free breakfast and lunch was provided for the students, but no transportation was offered. The program included both remedial and enrichment activities. Students also were able to participate in swim lessons and swim team activities, arranged with the city Parks and Recreation Department.

According to Williams, during the regular school year, the Saxon Math Series has helped during the regular school year with good academic growth through the building, with better mastery of concepts by students. Evaluate Software was added to the first grade, after being used in the second through fifth grades for several years. The system helps teachers identify areas in which specific students need extra help. Technology use by students was increased the past school year, with several Chromebooks in each classroom. Williams said the school is transitioning to becoming a "Google School."

Middle School Principal Matt Abernathy reported an increase in technology use by both teachers and students. All English, science and history classrooms have sets of either Chromebooks or laptops, and the library has a class set of laptops. In addition, all of the MAP tests were administered on Chromebooks. All grade levels practiced research skills.

High School Principal Sean Kirksey reported the transition of the high school to a 1:1 school, meaning all students will have access to an electronic device. This will lead to utilization of the online textbook and resources provided by McGraw Hill. The freshman class will be offered a course called "Microgoogle," improving skills and understanding of Google and Microsoft applications. The school will continue to use the USA TestPrep assessment program to ensure maximum learning for each student. Chromebooks make this a fast and effective way to ensure all students are learning.

Kirksey also reported that a Chess Club and History Club will be added to high school activities.

The board approved updated student handbooks for all three schools. The Middle School Student Handbook is the only handbook to have any changes other than dates and names. Those changes involve minor adjustments to the dress code and changes in attendance rules. Letters giving details have been sent to parents.

The next regular board meeting is set for July 20.
