A bid was approved by the California R-I School Board for the construction of a new concession stand/restroom facility for the softball/baseball field. The bid was approved at the regular monthly meeting, Wednesday, May 25, in the high school library media room.

The low bid from Harlan's Steel Buildings, Versailles, in the amount of $23,271.12 was selected from among the three bidders. The board approved the bid, contingent on Superintendent Dwight Sanders ascertaining the company had the necessary insurance.

Two students were presented diplomas earned under the Missouri Option program. The two were Cole Wolverton and Jordan Meyer.

The board also approved several staff resignations which will be effective at the end of the school year. Resignations were accepted from Nicole Raithel - speech therapist, Velvia Fortenberry - speech therapist, Danielle Morrow - elementary teacher, Amy Mouse - elementary teacher, Crystal Ashley - high school health aide/high school secretary, Robert Record - middle school special education teacher, Angela Bardwell - elementary school special education teacher and Heather Henley elementary teacher.

The elementary school enrollment was at 627 for May. Principal Daniel Williams reported that it had been a busy month. Middle School Principal Matt Abernathy reported enrollment at 283. Principal Sean Kirksey reported enrollment at 391, including the 88 graduating seniors. All reported that summer school planning was nearly complete.

Although the outbreak of Shigella in the county was not known to have been present in the California schools, Sanders said the normal disinfection which would carried out before summer school was much more than extensive than usual, just in case some infectious agent happened to be present.

The next regular board meeting is set for Wednesday, June 29, a week later than usual, because of the probable date for the arrival of state school funds.
