Jefferson City man charged in arson attempt

A Jefferson City man has been charged with attempted arson for an incident that occurred Saturday night.

Marquise Hamilton, 19, is also charged with misdemeanor domestic assault.

As of Monday, he was being held on a $25,000 bond in the Cole County Jail.

At 11:30 p.m. on Saturday, Hamilton allegedly got into a verbal argument with family members at an apartment house in the 900 block of Jackson Street, according to a Jefferson City Police Department probable cause statement.

Hamilton poured a jug of cooking oil on counters and a table in the kitchen and made attempts to ignite the oil with a cigarette lighter while family members were in the home.

Hamilton admitted to doing these things because he was angry at his family.

There are five apartments at the Jackson Street residence.
