Jamestown school prepares for coming year

The Jamestown C-I School District has been preparing for the coming school year in several ways.

At the special Aug. 1 school board meeting, the board approved the budget for the 2017-18 year. The board also discussed the date for the start of school, finally leaving it at the previously decided Aug. 21 date.

The school will have an open house 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 17.

For anyone who wants a tour of the building renovations before registration, that will be held from 5:30-6 p.m. on that same evening.

The open house will begin with welcome and introductions in the gym. At 6:15 p.m., all students will be dismissed to go to their classrooms and meet their teachers.

Since the first day of school - Aug. 21 - is the same day as the total solar eclipse, the staff has planned activities for the event of the day.

Anyone who has a student in the school district, and wishes that student to participate in the event activities, must have the signed permission slip, available from the school, in by 8:15 a.m. Aug. 21. This is due to safety concerns.

Parents are welcome to join the eclipse activities, which will take place on the ball field at 12:45 p.m. on that day. Safety glasses are available for purchase at many locations for any parent or community member who wishes to be there for the event.

In addition, to other school-related items discussed, the tax rate hearing was set for 6 p.m. Aug. 24 at the Jamestown school library media center.
